About Me
Rude Rock and Resonant Memories is a CD length collection of my songs. They were composed over a long period starting in the late 1980s and recorded in several sessions from 2010 to 2024. I think of these songs as a gathering together of all the styles and influences of my favorite recording artists throughout my life of music. And they’re also something of myself: finding my own voice, drawing from my imagination or from sources around me.
I have spent my life working as an environmental scientist, while music was a sideline. I wanted to craft a set of songs that expressed my inner creative need. At the same time, I want to make an offering to my friends and family, and to give back to the grassroots music community that has sustained me here in Oregon.
I want to especially thank and acknowledge the huge contribution of my brother Paul, who generously set up the Sawmills Studio session in November 2017. He played guitar and bass, sang and took on the tasks of much of the production and mixing throughout. This was very much a family event: our family stayed with us in the residential facilities to celebrate my 70th birthday. My nephew Charlie also joined us on guitar and vocals, together with our special guest from France, François Floquet on drums.
Special thanks also to engineer and producer Sean Flora for his technical expertise, discerning musical ear, and contacts to several great session players: to my son Colin, who contributed guitar tracks and vocals, and to my long-time musical collaborator Bob Rindy for his amazing electric violin talent.
And last but not least, I am greatly indebted to renowned bassist Glen Moore, a founding member of the great jazz and world music band Oregon: for his patient teaching which grounded me in their tonal language, for help in harmonizing songs, and for his powerful playing on the Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio session.
